The man who would be Israel’s king is now introduced. An introduction loaded with hints about his lack of spiritual discernment, knowledge and care. Outwardly he looked like a king; appearances can be deceiving.
Misguided Demands
Samuel is old and the people are concerned about a successor since his own sons are corrupt. While a king in Israel had long been anticipated, their reasons for a king now are misguided by their lack of faith in God.
One Man’s Influence
God had been preparing Samuel in secret for decades. Preparing him to influence Israel towards obedience and unity. Here we see one man’s influence by faith and prayer bring victory, that would influence kings.
Discovery and Recovery
For seven months the Philistines possessed Israel’s ark of the covenant which disobedient Israel lost on the battlefield. God and God alone demonstrated that He did not lose, but He recovered the ark to prove it.
Glory Departed
Israel goes to battle the Philistines. Suffering an initial defeat, the people call the ark of the covenant to the battlefield. Again defeated, men slaughtered, the ark lost, Eli and sons die, the glory departs in judgment
