Lesson: virtue is unwasted because God values it. Samuel the prophet, David, God’s man, and Abigail, a woman of virtue and courage, all found themselves in service to those who turned out to be utterly evil fools.
Extraordinary Restraint
David has a remarkable chance to slay Saul and end the nightmare of being hunted. Instead he exercises the kind of restraint that we would expect from a man who’s heart is deeply concerned with God’s will.
Hardship without Bitterness
While David was hiding from Saul, word came that the Philistines were robbing the harvests of the Jews. David came to their rescue but they told Saul. David fled and it was told again. Then David penned Ps 54.
Choosing Sides
Everyone in this story had to choose sides; God or Satan. David fled for his life to hide in a cave from Saul. While there Saul learned that the high priest helped David and for this Saul had Doeg slaughter them.
