The city of Samaria is still besieged by the Syrian army. Starvation in the city has now spawned the most ghoulish type of cannibalism. The king is angry with the prophet Elisha for not doing more to end it, the king also ignored that he is largely the reason why this judgment is on them. The prophet promises abundant food by tomorrow, and it will come by way of four leprous men who’s conscience is stirred — heroic lepers!
Applying Grace
The school of the prophets had outgrown their facility and headed to the forest to cut timber for their building expansion. They invited the prophet Elisha and he agreed. As a servant was cutting a tree the axe head flew off the handle and sank into the river. This metaphorically warns us about flying off the handle in anger or losing our cutting edge in our serving faith. Next the prophet overcomes Syrian invaders with grace.
The Defective General
The great Syrian general Naaman was a leper. In his home was a young Jewish girl who said to Naaman’s wife, if Naaman were in Israel, then the prophet would heal him. Keeping in mind that his greatest defect was not his leprosy but his religion! Naaman acted on the young faithful girls words and went to the prophet’s house. Then the story begins to really unroll lessons for us, which all started with the Jewish girl!
Major Malfunctions
In this chapter there are five separate events and four major malfunction. Malfunctions are failures to perform as designed: death, debt, poison, and inadequacy, etc. The major malfunction of life is death, and sin is the sole cause of everything going wrong, not as originally planned — But of course God address it all and our roles are assigned by Him, to trust and to remain faithful.
The Three Stooges
Here are three kings that took it upon themselves to invade Moab to punish them for rebelling against Israel. There is no indication that they sought God until the kings and their armies are faced with dying of thirst. The wicked King Jehoram, the good but foolish King Jehoshaphat, and the pagan king of Edom then inquire of the prophet Elisha who sternly rebukes Jehoram but saves the day. Ultimately the campaign was a failure.
