In bullheaded fashion, David insists on doing what he knows is outside of God’s will, and before he submits, the deed will be done. As so often with sin, once the act is committed the realization and conviction hit with consequence.

King David’s Conquest
King David subdued enemies and threats to Israel’s west, north and south, issuing in regional peace that extended beyond Solomon’s reign. It enhanced Israel’s economy and gave Solomon peace and materials to build the Temple.
King David’s Humility
As David dwelled in his own cedar paneled house, he realized that ark was still in a tent. He was moved to build a house for it; a house for God. But the Lord told him No, and that He would build David’s royal line to Messiah.
