Joshua dismisses the warriors of the Transjordan tribes. As they returned to the land given them by Moses, intending to preserve tribal unity in the future, a memorial alter was built, nearly leading to civil war.
Refuge and Influence
Six cities, known as cities of refuge, are chosen for any who accidentally kill another person. Fleeing there would protect them from vengeance of family members. Also, the Levites received land amongst the tribes.
Living with Enemies
There remained seven tribes which had yet to receive their allotted lands. Joshua sends out surveyors to set boundaries for the Lord to assign. But the enemies remain amongst the people. Joshua receives his share.
Iron Chariots
The territory of Joseph’s descendants, the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim, is now allocated. But they protest that the enemies are too strong, to which Joshua encourages them to work and war and win.
Boundaries and Grace
The tribe of Judah gets the lion’s share of territory amongst the tribes. Their borders are marked and cities listed but most special is the story of Caleb, his son-in-law to be, and Caleb’s daughter Achsah.
